What the Marantz adds is the analog and DAC stage, and what it costs is roughly the Denon plus a good stereo amp. The one question that decides it: is this a theater that also serves as the household's serious music system?

Pick the Marantz CINEMA 50 if
- Music is at least half of what the system plays and you sit down to listen in stereo.
- You want the quieter, more refined presentation Sound & Vision praised on the original CINEMA 50.
- The budget already covers the Denon plus an outboard amp, and you would rather have it in one box.
Pick the Denon AVR-X3900H if
- The system is movie-first and the money is better spent on speakers or a second sub.
- You want the same channel count, HDMI board, and sub outputs for considerably less.
- You want a model that has been on sale long enough to have bench numbers on the way.
Verdict
Buy the Denon AVR-X3900H for a theater; it does everything the Marantz does for Atmos, with the same pre-outs, sub outputs, and HDMI board. Buy the Marantz CINEMA 50 Series 2 when the same rack also carries the household's stereo listening, because the new DAC stage and HDAM preamp are where the money goes. The exception is a room where Dirac Live is planned from day one, since both charge for the license and the price gap then buys a lot of speaker.
