How to Budget for a Home Theater
Percentage-based allocation, what to prioritize at every tier, where cheaping out hurts, and the costs everyone forgets.

A home theater budget is not one purchase, it is a dozen purchases that need to make sense together. Spend too much on the display and the sound is thin; spend too much on the receiver and there is no money left for the subwoofer that makes the receiver worth owning. This guide gives you a starting split, tells you where the money actually changes the experience, and lists the costs that catch almost everyone on the first build.
A starting allocation
A balanced system has no single component so far ahead of the rest that the others hold it back. These percentages are a starting point for a complete system bought at once. Adjust them for what you already own and for the room, but if you find yourself at 60 percent on the display, stop and reconsider.

Within the speaker share, a good internal split for a 5.1 system is roughly: front left and right 30 percent, center channel 20 percent, subwoofer 30 percent, surrounds 20 percent. In a 5.1.2 or 7.1.4 system, the height channels can be the least expensive speakers in the room, because they carry mostly ambient sound and are often out of the direct line of sight.
Where to spend first at each tier
The tiers below are described in relative terms. The point is what to prioritize when the total is fixed, not to attach a dollar figure to each.
Entry tier
The constraint is that everything is a compromise, so the goal is to choose compromises that a later upgrade can fix. Priorities in order:
- A capable receiver with at least 7 amplified channels and eARC. This is the component that everything else plugs into and the one you will keep the longest. Do not buy a 5.1 receiver to save a little; you will replace it inside two years.
- The display sized to the seat, using the TV size calculator. A mid-range LCD at the right size beats a premium panel that is 10 inches too small.
- Three matched front speakers and a real subwoofer, run as 3.1. Timbre matching across the front stage matters more than adding surrounds, and a 3.1 system with a decent sub sounds better than a 5.1 system with a flimsy one.
- Surrounds later, when the budget allows. A 3.1 system with the receiver set correctly is a complete, satisfying theater.
Skip at this tier: height channels, external amps, acoustic treatment beyond a rug and curtains, and anything labeled "premium" in the cable aisle.
Mid tier
The system can be complete on day one. The goal shifts from "make it work" to "make it right."
- Display: an OLED or high-end mini-LED in the 65 to 85 inch range, or a 4K projector with lens shift and a fixed-frame screen if the room supports it. See projector vs TV.
- Speakers: a full 5.1.2 or 7.1 layout from a single manufacturer's line, so the tonal balance matches across channels, with a subwoofer capable of clean output to 20 Hz. Consider two smaller subs instead of one large one; two subs in different positions smooth bass across multiple seats.
- Receiver: 9 or 11 processing channels with full pre-outs and a good room correction system, so the next step does not require replacing it.
- Treatment and seating: first reflection point absorption, bass traps in the front corners, and a seat you can spend three hours in. This is where the mid tier separates itself from the entry tier.
High tier
Diminishing returns are real above this level, and the money should go to things that scale: the room, the bass, and the front stage.
- The room itself: light control, dark surfaces, treatment designed from measurements rather than guesswork. A great system in a bad room loses to a good system in a great room, every time. Start with the room modes calculator.
- Multiple subwoofers: three or four, with independent management in the processor. This is the single largest audible upgrade available at this tier, and it is not close.
- A processor plus separate amplifiers, or a flagship receiver with an external amp for the front three, giving the center and front left/right real power headroom.
- A display that fills the seat's field of view: a 100 inch or larger projection screen, or the largest OLED that fits, sized to a THX 36 degree angle from the primary seat.
Where cheaping out hurts
Some components are load-bearing. Cutting them undermines everything else.
The subwoofer. The sub reproduces the bottom two octaves, from 20 to 80 Hz, where most of the physical impact of a film soundtrack lives. A small, underpowered sub either distorts, rolls off above 40 Hz, or both. Every other speaker in the system is relieved of bass duty by the crossover, so the sub is doing the work of five speakers in the frequency range that people feel. The center channel. Somewhere between 60 and 80 percent of a film's dialogue and on-screen sound is routed to the center. A center speaker that does not match the front left and right, or that uses a poor horizontal driver layout, causes voices to sound thin, sibilant, or muffled off-axis. If you can afford one good speaker, make it the center.
Seating. You are going to spend hundreds of hours in it. A seat at the wrong distance costs you the viewing angle you sized the display for; a seat at the wrong height costs you comfort; a seat that squeaks or has a headrest that blocks the surround speakers costs you the soundstage. Do not build the room around a couch that was free.
The receiver's channel count and pre-outs. Buying one channel too few, or without pre-outs, means replacing the whole receiver to add two height speakers. The difference between the right receiver and the almost-right one is small compared to the cost of buying twice.
Where cheaping out does not hurt
Some components are commodities, and the premium versions sell on anxiety rather than performance.
HDMI cables. Digital signals either arrive or they do not. A certified Premium High Speed or Ultra High Speed cable at the right length is the whole requirement, and cables that cost many times more deliver the same bits. Read HDMI cables explained before spending here.
Speaker wire. Ordinary stranded copper of adequate gauge is all any speaker needs. The speaker wire gauge calculator will tell you the gauge for your run length; 16 AWG covers most rooms and 14 AWG covers long runs. Exotic conductors, directional cable, and cable "burn-in" have no measured effect.
"Audiophile" power conditioners. A basic surge protector with adequate joule rating and enough outlets is worth having. Products that claim to lower the noise floor or improve dynamics by cleaning the mains supply do not do so in any measurable way on equipment with a properly designed power supply, which is nearly all of it.
Planning the upgrade path
The cheapest system is one you build once. The second cheapest is one you build in stages without ever replacing a component. That takes planning at the first purchase.
Buy the receiver for the final system, not the first. A receiver with 9 or 11 processing channels and full pre-outs costs modestly more than a 7 channel unit without them and lets the system grow to 7.1.4 with only speaker purchases and, eventually, one external amp. Start 3.1, grow to 5.1, then 5.1.2. The front three and a sub deliver most of the experience. Surrounds add envelopment. Heights add the Atmos layer. Each step is a speaker purchase, not a system replacement, if the fronts were chosen from a line that includes matching surrounds and heights.
Run wire for the full layout on day one. If the walls are open or you are already fishing cable, run speaker wire to every position in the final layout, including four height positions and two subwoofer positions, and terminate them at wall plates. Using the used market
Audio equipment ages gracefully, and the used market is where a mid-tier budget buys a high-tier system.
- Speakers are the best used buy. Drivers and cabinets last decades. Inspect for foam surround rot on older woofers, pushed-in tweeters, and cabinet damage. Listen before buying if possible.
- Subwoofers are good used buys if the amplifier plate is working; those are the failure point. Ask the seller to demonstrate it at volume.
- External power amplifiers are excellent used buys. A well-built amp from any era is still a well-built amp.
- Receivers are the worst used buy. HDMI standards, HDCP versions, and audio formats change every few years, and a receiver from a few generations ago may lack eARC, HDMI 2.1, or current room correction. Buy the receiver new or nearly new.
- Displays are risky used. Panel wear, burn-in on OLED, and lamp hours on projectors are hard to verify. Buy new or from a source with a return policy.
Commonly forgotten costs
Every first-time builder discovers some of these after the main components have arrived. Put them in the budget before you start.
Installation hardware
- TV wall mount or projector ceiling mount, rated for the weight
- Speaker mounts, brackets, or stands for surrounds and heights
- Subwoofer isolation platform if the sub sits on a suspended floor
- Wall plates and banana plugs or binding posts for in-wall wire
- Conduit or pull string for future cable runs
Wire and cable
- Speaker wire for every run, plus 20 percent extra
- HDMI cables of the correct certification and length, including an active or optical cable for a projector
- Subwoofer cable (RCA) long enough to reach the corner
- Ethernet cable to the receiver and streaming devices, which is more reliable than wireless for 4K streaming
- Power strips with enough outlets and surge protection
Room and control
- Blackout curtains or shades for every window
- A rug if the floor is hard, which is the cheapest acoustic treatment available
- First reflection point absorbers and corner bass traps, per acoustic treatment basics
- A universal remote or hub, because five remotes on the coffee table is where enthusiasm goes to die
- Dimmable lighting on a switch reachable from the seat
Calibration
- A calibration disc or test pattern app for the display
- A sound pressure level meter, or a phone app for rough channel level checks
- A measurement microphone and free measurement software for anyone who wants to place subwoofers and set treatment based on data rather than guesswork
- A professional display calibration, for a high-tier system where the panel's accuracy is worth verifying
Total these before committing to the main components. On a typical build they land between 8 and 15 percent of the total, and finding that out after the speakers are ordered is how a balanced system ends up with no surrounds for six months.
