This is the choice for someone building a first Atmos room who wants to know whether the step up in Denon's X series buys anything they will actually use. Both receivers handle HDMI 2.1 gaming sources and Audyssey room correction. The one question that decides it: will you ever run more than two height speakers, or add an external amp?

Pick the Denon AVR-X1800H if
- Your room is small to medium and 5.1.2 is the end goal.
- You have no more than three HDMI 2.1 sources.
- You want the most Atmos capability per dollar and do not plan to add an external amp.
Pick the Denon AVR-X3900H if
- You want 7.1.4 without replacing the receiver later; a small two-channel amp on the pre-outs gets you there.
- You run four or more subwoofers or plan to add Dirac Live.
- You have a projector plus a TV, or a second zone, and need multiple HDMI outputs.
Verdict
Buy the AVR-X1800H if 5.1.2 is where the room ends; it does that job well and the extra money is better spent on speakers. Buy the AVR-X3900H if you want 5.1.4 or more, four subs, or an upgrade path through pre-outs. The exception is a large room where dialogue clarity matters most: XT32 is a meaningful step up in room correction even at 5.1.2.

- No. It has seven amplified channels and no main pre-outs, so 5.1.2 or 7.1 is the ceiling.
- Does the AVR-X3900H include Dirac Live?
- No. Audyssey MultEQ XT32 is included; Dirac Live is a paid license on top.
- Is the older AVR-X3800H a better buy?
- If you find it on clearance, yes. The X3900H replaced it in May 2026 and the core channel layout is the same.
