How we got these numbers
A 43-inch 16:9 screen is 37.5 inches wide and 21.1 inches tall. The distance recommendations come from viewing angle standards used in cinema design: SMPTE recommends the screen fill at least 30° of your horizontal field of view, and THX recommends 36°, with 40° widely used as the maximum for the best seat.
Converting those angles into distances for a 37.5-inch-wide screen gives 5 ft 10 in (30°), 4 ft 10 in (36°), and 4 ft 3 in (40°). The resolution limit uses visual acuity: 20/20 vision resolves about one arcminute, so past 2 ft 10 in the individual pixels of a 43-inch 4K panel merge together.
If you sit farther than 5 ft 10 in, consider a larger screen. If you sit closer than 4 ft 3 in, the picture will feel like an IMAX front row: some people love it, most prefer to step back or size down.
