14 feet away

What size TV for 14 feet away?

A 115-inch TV is the sweet spot at 14 feet. Anything from 103 to 125 inches sits in the SMPTE-to-THX range for mixed use; go larger for a dedicated movie room.

What 14 feet means for your screen

  • Note: A 114 inch panel is the target, and it will look enormous in the box

Sitting 14 ft away makes 114 inches the right answer, which is bigger than most people picture. Measure 100 in of clear wall before buying, and check that the panel fits through your doorways and up your stairs. Almost nobody who buys at this size wishes they had gone smaller.

  • Watch: 4K detail is invisible past 7.4 ft

With 20/20 vision you stop resolving individual 4K pixels on a 114 inch screen beyond 7.4 ft, and your seat is at 14 ft. The resolution is not doing anything for you at this distance, so spend the budget on contrast and brightness instead, or move closer.

How we got these numbers

At 14 feet (168 inches) from your eyes to the screen, TV size is a question of viewing angle. SMPTE's cinema guidance calls for the screen to fill at least 30° of your horizontal view; THX recommends 36°, and 40° is the widely used cap for the best seat. Casual TV viewing is comfortable at 24° to 30°.

Each angle converts to a screen width (2 × distance × tan(angle ÷ 2)) and then to a 16:9 diagonal. At 14 feet that gives roughly 82 inches at 24°, 103 inches at 30°, 125 inches at 36°, and 140 inches at 40°.

Sizes are rounded to what stores actually sell. If you are between two sizes and the wall allows it, the larger one is almost always the better long-term choice; the most common regret is buying too small.

Common questions

What size TV should I get for 14 feet?
For mixed movie and TV use, 103–125"; a 115-inch TV is the sweet spot. For a dedicated movie room go 125–140". For casual viewing 82–103" is comfortable.
Is a 65-inch TV big enough for 14 feet?
A 65-inch screen at 14 feet fills 19° of your view. That is under the SMPTE 30° minimum, so it will feel small for movies at this distance.
Is a 75-inch TV too big for 14 feet?
A 75-inch screen at 14 feet is 22°. That is within THX guidance, so it is not too big.
Will I see pixels at 14 feet?
On a 115-inch 4K TV, pixels stop being resolvable beyond 7 ft 6 in, so at 14 feet you will not see them. 1080p would show pixel structure inside about 14 ft 11 in.
