11 feet away

What size TV for 11 feet away?

An 86-inch TV is the sweet spot at 11 feet. Anything from 81 to 98 inches sits in the SMPTE-to-THX range for mixed use; go larger for a dedicated movie room.

What 11 feet means for your screen

  • Note: A 90 inch panel is the target, and it will look enormous in the box

Sitting 11 ft away makes 90 inches the right answer, which is bigger than most people picture. Measure 78 in of clear wall before buying, and check that the panel fits through your doorways and up your stairs. Almost nobody who buys at this size wishes they had gone smaller.

  • Watch: 4K detail is invisible past 5.8 ft

With 20/20 vision you stop resolving individual 4K pixels on a 90 inch screen beyond 5.8 ft, and your seat is at 11 ft. The resolution is not doing anything for you at this distance, so spend the budget on contrast and brightness instead, or move closer.

How we got these numbers

At 11 feet (132 inches) from your eyes to the screen, TV size is a question of viewing angle. SMPTE's cinema guidance calls for the screen to fill at least 30° of your horizontal view; THX recommends 36°, and 40° is the widely used cap for the best seat. Casual TV viewing is comfortable at 24° to 30°.

Each angle converts to a screen width (2 × distance × tan(angle ÷ 2)) and then to a 16:9 diagonal. At 11 feet that gives roughly 64 inches at 24°, 81 inches at 30°, 98 inches at 36°, and 110 inches at 40°.

Sizes are rounded to what stores actually sell. If you are between two sizes and the wall allows it, the larger one is almost always the better long-term choice; the most common regret is buying too small.

Common questions

What size TV should I get for 11 feet?
For mixed movie and TV use, 81–98"; an 86-inch TV is the sweet spot. For a dedicated movie room go 98–110". For casual viewing 64–81" is comfortable.
Is a 65-inch TV big enough for 11 feet?
A 65-inch screen at 11 feet fills 24° of your view. That is under the SMPTE 30° minimum, so it will feel small for movies at this distance.
Is a 75-inch TV too big for 11 feet?
A 75-inch screen at 11 feet is 28°. That is within THX guidance, so it is not too big.
Will I see pixels at 11 feet?
On an 86-inch 4K TV, pixels stop being resolvable beyond 5 ft 7 in, so at 11 feet you will not see them. 1080p would show pixel structure inside about 11 ft 2 in.
