85-inch TV

How high should you mount an 85-inch TV?

Put the bottom edge about 21 inches from the floor so the center of the 42-inch-tall panel lands at seated eye level (42 inches). Adjust for your own eye height with the table below.

Mounting an 85-inch panel in a real room

  • Watch: The bottom edge lands at 21 in, below most furniture

An 85 inch screen is 42 in tall, so centring it on a seated eye line of 42 in puts its bottom edge lower than a typical 28 in media console. Either wall-mount it above the furniture and accept a few degrees of upward angle, or use a low-profile stand built for the purpose.

  • Good: Bigger screens are more forgiving about height

An 85 inch panel is 42 in tall, so even if the centre sits a few inches off your eye line, the picture still spans it. Mounting error matters far less at this size than it does on a 50 inch screen.

How we got these numbers

An 85-inch 16:9 TV measures about 74.1 by 41.7 inches. The reference mounting position puts the center of that panel at your seated eye height, which for most sofas is 40 to 44 inches. We use 42 inches as the default and show other eye heights in the table.

From there the bottom edge is simply eye height minus half the panel height: 42 − 20.8 = 21.2 inches. If the TV has to go higher, the number that matters is the elevation angle from your seat. Under 10° is comfortable for long sessions; 15° is the practical limit, and it needs a tilting mount.

The bracket height depends on your specific TV: measure from its bottom edge to the center of the VESA holes and add that to the bottom-edge height above.

Common questions

How high should an 85-inch TV be mounted?
For a typical sofa (eyes about 42 inches off the floor), put the bottom edge of an 85-inch TV at about 21 inches, which places the center at 42 inches, straight in front of your eyes.
How high is the center of an 85-inch TV?
The panel is 41.7 inches tall, so the center sits 20.8 inches above the bottom edge. Aim the center at your seated eye height.
Can I mount an 85-inch TV above a fireplace?
With a 60-inch mantel, the center of an 85-inch TV ends up about 81 inches high, 19° above eye level at 9 ft 6 in. That exceeds the 15° comfort limit; use a pull-down mount or a different wall.
What if I sit farther away?
Elevation angle shrinks with distance, so a higher mount becomes acceptable. At 9 ft 6 in the center can go up to 62 inches (10°) before it gets uncomfortable; at double the distance, roughly twice as high above eye level.
