Dolby Vision
A licensed HDR format that adds dynamic, scene-by-scene metadata and up to 12-bit color on top of the PQ curve for more consistent tone mapping.
Dolby Vision carries metadata describing each scene or shot rather than one value for the whole program. The display uses that data, plus its own known capabilities, to tone-map every scene into its brightness range.
The benefit is fewer crushed shadows and clipped highlights on displays that fall short of the mastering peak. Because the mapping is standardized, two different displays should render a scene with similar intent rather than each guessing.
The format supports up to 12-bit color and mastering peaks to 10,000 nits, though real content is usually mastered at 1,000 or 4,000. Source, receiver, and display must all support it, or the signal falls back to HDR10 automatically.
