Which ultra-short-throw projector is worth buying, and what screen goes with it?

The best ultra-short-throw projector for a living room and the ceiling-light-rejecting screen that makes it look like a giant TV with the lights on.

An ultra-short-throw projector lives on a credenza a few inches from the wall and throws a 100-inch-plus picture upward, which solves the two problems that keep projectors out of living rooms: nobody wants a ceiling mount, and nobody wants a cable across the floor. This page is for shared spaces where a projector has to coexist with daylight, furniture, and a TV-style layout.

We used measured brightness, contrast, color gamut, and input lag from projector review labs, and we treated the screen as part of the purchase because a UST on a plain white wall wastes most of what you paid for. The projector pick is the one most often recommended in its class, and the screen is a lenticular design tested against other UST screens.

The Hisense PX3-PRO is the most-recommended UST in its class for good reason: an RGB triple-laser source measured at 3,246 ANSI lumens by Projector Reviews, a wide color gamut, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and about 3,000:1 native contrast, which is high for a DLP. Input lag measured 18 ms at 4K60 and it accepts 1080p240 for gaming. Its 0.22:1 throw produces 80 to 150 inches from a cabinet a few inches off the wall.

Caveat: Pixel-shifted 4K from a 0.47-inch DLP chip, and like all USTs it depends heavily on the screen.

The Elite Screens Aeon CLR 3 is a lenticular ceiling-light-rejecting surface designed for the steep upward light path of a UST, so overhead lights and windows are rejected while the projector's image comes through. The Hook Up's UST screen comparison measured about 0.97 gain against a rated 0.8, and the 180-degree viewing angle keeps the picture even across a wide couch. The edge-free frame reads like a big TV on the wall. The 123-inch size is the closest to 120 that Elite makes in this line.

Caveat: Only for UST projectors; a standard-throw projector will look dim on this material.

Common questions

Do I need a special screen for a UST projector?
Yes, if you want it to look good with any light in the room. UST light hits the screen from a steep angle below, and a lenticular CLR or ALR screen rejects light from above while reflecting the projector back at the seats. A white wall or standard screen works in a dark room but washes out fast.
How far from the wall does a UST projector sit?
Typically a few inches to about a foot from the screen surface, depending on image size. At a 0.22:1 throw a 120-inch image needs roughly 2 feet from the lens to the screen, most of which is the cabinet depth. Run the throw calculator for the exact number.
Are UST projectors good for gaming?
The current triple-laser models are. The PX3-PRO measured around 18 ms at 4K60 and supports high refresh at 1080p, which is competitive with many TVs in game mode.
