The step from the L/R S to the L/R M is the step from a music pair to a system: eARC arrives, power triples to 150 watts a side, and Wi-Fi streaming through StreamMagic replaces Bluetooth-only. The force-cancelling passive radiators fire from the sides in opposing pairs, which cancels cabinet vibration and is why a box this size can be placed near a wall without bloating.
