VRR (Variable Refresh Rate)
A display feature that lets the refresh rate track a game's frame rate in real time, eliminating tearing and stutter without added lag.
VRR lets the display wait for each new frame rather than refreshing on a fixed clock. When a console delivers frames unevenly, say between 40 and 60 per second, the panel refreshes exactly when each arrives, so no frame is torn or repeated.
For a theater used for gaming it removes the choice between tearing with V-sync off and stutter plus lag with V-sync on. It is defined in HDMI 2.1 as HDMI Forum VRR, and many displays also accept the FreeSync and G-Sync variants.
Typical ranges run from 40 or 48 Hz up to the panel maximum of 120 or 144 Hz, with low framerate compensation extending the floor. VRR has no benefit for film at a fixed 24 fps, and some displays flicker near the bottom of the range.
