The best acoustic panels and bass traps for a home theater, chosen for published absorption data, mineral wool or fiberglass cores, and fire ratings.

Acoustic treatment fixes problems that no speaker or receiver can: early reflections that blur dialogue and bass that booms in one seat and disappears in the next. The trap is that the market is full of foam and thin decorative panels with no published data. This page is for anyone treating a dedicated theater or media room who wants products with real absorption test results.

We chose products with published NRC or third-octave absorption data from independent labs, cores of mineral wool or high-density fiberglass, and enough thickness to work below 250 Hz where treatment starts to matter. Bass traps come first because every room needs them; panels come next for first reflection points; diffusion is optional and last.

The core is Rockwool Rockboard 60 plus AFB mineral wool in a wood frame with jute fabric. Acoustimac publishes an average NRC of 0.95 or better from its own test. It will not reach as low as a 13-inch trap, but it covers the upper bass and lower midrange where most boominess lives, and a pair in the front corners is a real improvement over none.

Once absorption is handled, a true quadratic residue diffuser on the rear wall keeps the room from sounding dead while breaking up the flutter between the back wall and the screen. Common questions

Do bass traps actually work in a home theater?
Yes, if they are thick enough. A 13-inch corner trap of mineral wool absorbs meaningfully down to 50 to 60 Hz and smooths the peaks and dips a subwoofer creates. Thin foam corner wedges do almost nothing below 200 Hz.
How many acoustic panels do I need?
Start with two bass traps in the front corners and four to six 2-inch panels at the first reflection points on the side walls and ceiling. Aim to treat about 20 to 30 percent of the wall surface. More than that and the room starts to sound dead.
Should I use diffusers or absorbers on the back wall?
Absorb first, then consider diffusion. If the seats are within 6 feet of the rear wall, absorption is the safer choice. If there is more distance, a QRD diffuser behind the seats keeps the room lively without the slap echo.
