How we got these numbers
TV size depends on where you sit, and in a 13 by 17 foot room the seat has a natural home: about 62% of the way back, or 10.5 feet from the screen wall. That position stays off the back wall (boomy bass) and away from the room's midpoint (a bass null). With the screen about a foot off the wall, that is 9 ft 6 in from eyes to picture.
From that distance we apply the viewing angle standards: SMPTE's 30° minimum, THX's 36° recommendation, and the 40° cinematic maximum. At 9 ft 6 in that means 70 to 96 inches depending on how movie-focused the room is. A 77-inch screen lands at 33°, right in the middle.
The table below shows how the answer changes if the couch moves. The 13-foot wall itself fits up to a 151-inch panel with a foot of clearance on each side, so wall width is rarely the limit; seating distance is.
