The math behind the answer
The reference position for a display is with its center at your seated eye height, typically 40 to 44 inches on a sofa. That keeps your neck neutral and puts you in the panel's best viewing cone, which matters for LCD TVs whose contrast falls off at an angle.
The calculator converts your screen size into panel height, then reports where the bottom edge should sit so the center lands at eye level. If the TV must go higher, for example above a console or fireplace, it computes the elevation angle from your seat and tells you whether that is comfortable (under 10°), tolerable (under 15°), or a problem.
Elevation angle depends on distance: the farther you sit, the higher a screen can go for the same angle. That is why a fireplace mount that is miserable at 8 feet may be acceptable at 14.

- How high should a 65 inch TV be mounted?
- With a 42 inch seated eye height, the bottom of a 65 inch TV should be about 26 inches from the floor, putting the center at 42 inches.
- Is mounting a TV above a fireplace bad?
- Usually, yes. It often puts the screen center 20° or more above eye level, causing neck strain and a washed-out picture on LCD panels. If you must, use a pull-down mount and check the mantel temperature.
- Should I tilt my TV?
- Only if it is mounted above eye level. Tilt the screen down by roughly the elevation angle so you are viewing it straight on.
